A post-war comedy-drama on Magnets and Materials

The year is 1946 in the sleepy village of Upper Copperbottom: The Reverend Bunting is due to judge the marrow competition when his housekeeper, Mrs Dingleberry, notices that the vicarage boiler is on the blink.  Could there be a fault with the bimetallic strip in the thermostat?  Or are there any other materials involved?  Furthermore, why is there a magnet in the scullery and why is Miss Baldock in the belfry?

It transpires that if the boiler isn't quickly fixed there is a serious threat of explosion!  In a chase against time the vicar and his assorted houseguests rally round in an attempt to save the day.

However, it would appear that one of them is a saboteur....

• The reasons for choosing certain materials for specific uses are illustrated

Key Stage 2

As KS1 but in greater detail...
• Thermal expansion is treated further with a use and demonstration of the bimetallic strip
• Expansion is explained in terms of molecules and how heat travels from hot to cold is demonstrated
• The magnetic properties of a current-carrying wire are illustrated with a simple demonstration of the electromagnet
